AMADOU SOW
AMADOU SOW'S COMMENTS ON HIS WORK I was lucky to grow up on the island of Goree, a place whose
atmosphere made me look closely to the world around me, which seems to me essential for encountering art. I was part of the earth, the sand and the stones of my world, materials which were my first means of expressing myself
through art.Already at an early age, I decided to become artist. My academic studies in painting, sculpture and graphics were then important for my further development, and materials such as stone, wood, glass, cloth,
paper, aluminium or clay were to become an interesting challenge. Earth and sand, however have remained my faourite materials. In most of these paintings (related to my study trip to the Peulhls of Massina and to the
Dogons in Mali), the dominant colours are shades of yellow, which represent light for me, and the black hole, which stands for a door, an opening and finally the universe. For several years, my works of art have not
had titles anymore. The overall theme of my most recent oeuvre, however, is the OPENING UP. |
