Rebecca Allen

Rebecca Allen is an internationally recognized media artist, inspired by the potential of media technology. Central to her work is the study of motion, especially human movement, as a form of communication and creative expression. Her work takes the form of computer animation, interactive installation and live multimedia performance.

Allen received a BFA Rhode Island School of Design, and a MS from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She was a member of the Architecture Machine Group at MIT (now known as the Media Lab) followed by the Computer Graphics Lab /NYIT, a world renowned computer animation research center.

She produced commissioned work in Europe and the U.S. before joining Virgin Interactive Entertainment in 1993. As creative Director and 3D Visionary she investigated the creative possibilities of cutting-edge interactive game technology.

Allen is currently creating an interactive installation involving artificial life and networked, 3D virtual environments. She is Chair of Department of Design and founding Co-Director of the Center for the Digital Arts at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Awards include an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Individual Achievement" and Japan's Nicograph Award for "Artistic and Technical Excellence". Her work is part of the permanent collection of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
