Since its creation the Leonardo Journal has been supporting space art. In 1970, Frank Malina, its founder, wrote the article "On the Visual Fine Arts in the Space Age" published in the Volume 3 of the journal.

Leonardo aims at promoting the artists working on the theme of space by publishing their articles but also by acting as a facilitator in bringing together artists involved in space art projects and space professionals.

It is in this framework that, in 1997, Leonardo/Olats launched the Space and the Arts Workshop also named "Les Rencontres du 13 avril" -"April 13th Workshop"- on the theme of "Artists as Space Explores".

Each year, the one day workshops gathered together around 20 people, artists, ingeniers, scientists, on a specific theme.

Between 1997 and 2002, six editions of the workshop took place in Boulogne-Billancourt, in the near suburb of Paris, co-organized by Leonardo/Olats, the OURS Foundation and the International Academy of Astronautics.

After six years, the workshop saw the people (artists and scientists) interested in space art increase by a large number. In 2004, the workshop took another dimension: it is now a "nomadic" workshop co-organized with other partner institutions.

La revue Leonardo s'intéresse à l'art spatial depuis ses débuts. En 1970, son fondateur Frank Malina écrivait l'article "On the Visual Fine Arts in the Space Age" paru dans le Volume 3 de la revue.

Leonardo s'emploie à faire connaître la démarche des artistes travaillant sur le thème de l'espace en publiant leurs articles mais aussi à favoriser les rencontres entre les artistes investis dans des projets et des professionnels de l'espace.

C'est dans ce contexte, qu'en 1997, Leonardo/Olats a lancé le Space and the Arts Workshop également appelé "Les Rencontres du 13 avril", dont le thème était "Les artistes comme explorateurs de l'espace".

Ces séminaires réunissaient une vingtaine de personnes, artistes, ingénieurs, scientifiques pour une journée, autour d'une thématique.

De 1997 à 2002, six éditions des rencontres ont eu lieu à Boulogne-Billancourt, dans la proche banlieue de Paris, co-organisées par Leonardo/Olats, the OURS Foundation et l'Académie Internationale d'Astronautique.

En six ans d'existence, le séminaire a vu croître la communauté des personnes (artistes et scientifiques) intéressées par l'art spatial. En 2004, il a pris une nouvelle dimension pour devenir "nomade" et être organisé avec d'autres organismes et institutions partenaires.
