MALINA ROGER F., The Artist as Space Explorer as Documented in the Art Journal Leonardo, 46th International Astronautical Congress, IAA, 1995
The international Art Journal Leonardo was founded in 1967 by theastronautical pioneer Frank J. Malina. The Journal is a peer reviewed sholarlyjournal which features articles written by artists about their own work.Since its inception the Editors of Leonardo have sought to document the workof artists involved with space exploration and astronomy. In this paper theauthor describes the work which ranges from artists who have launched artworks into space, created art works on earth visible and observed from space,as well as artists who have through their work interpreted the new landscapesmade accessible through space exploration. Leonardo has also published since1988 a number of on line electronic journals such as the Leoanrdo ElectronicAlmanac and the Leonardo World Wide Web site. These new media have been usedto disseminate documentation about the work of space artists. One space artist,Kitsou Dubois, has been awarded Leonardo Prizes. Through the championingof the work of space artists, Leonardo has sought to promote the work ofartists as being essential to the successful progress of space exploration.
