During the "space age" era, space activities appear increasingly as a themein Western popular music, as they do in popular culture generally. In combinationwith the electronics and tele-communications revolution, "pop/rock" musichas grown explosively during the space age to become an effectively globalculture. From this base a number of trends are emerging in the pattern ofinfluences that space activities have on pop music. The paper looks at theuse of themes and imagery in pop music; the role of space technology in themodern "globalization" of pop music; and current and future links betweenspace activities and pop music culture, including how public space programmesare affected by its influence on popular attitudes.
