WOODS Arthur, BERNASCONI Marco, The OUR-SPACE PEACE SCULPTURE: Further Developments In A Global Artwork For Space, in IAA/IAF 41st Congress of the International Astronautical Federation, October 1990, Dresden, Germany
This paper deals with the further developments of the global collaborative and pioneering artwork to be realized in outer space during the year 1992 called the OUR Space Peace Sculpture (OUR-SPS) as it is being implemented under the leadership of the OURS Foundation, an international, non-profit cultural/astronautical organization based in Switzerland. The OUR-SPS is symbolically designed to represent both the astronomical sign of the planet Earth and an ancient sign of peace and unity. Its message of "Peace on, off and with Earth" is strongly tied to a new climate for world peace as well as a concern for the state of the world environment. As an unprecedented artwork designed to take place in the space environment, it is helping to introduce a cultural dimension to the development of this frontier. Through the collaboration of artists in many countreis, the project is spreading an awareness of the space potential to new audiences as well as stimulating artists to create new forms of expression. By utilizing both space technology and the space environment for its realization, the OUR-SPS is particularly well suite to communicate to the global audience that "Space for Peace and Progress" is not only beneficial but crucial to the well being of the planet.
Specific developments discussed in the paper include the evolution of launch arrangemetns with the space agencies of the US and the USSR contractor and technology selection, a broadening of the artistic collaboration through events and exhibitions and the project's widening public awareness activities.
Note : this project has not been realized.
