L'art technologique a un passé, mais a t-il une mémoire ?

L'histoire de l'art contemporain ignore le plus souvent l'art lié aux nouvelles technologies ou ne prend pas en compte cet axe dans l'oeuvre des artistes qu'elle considère.

Afin de resituer l'art technologique par rapport à sa propre histoire et plus largement dans le contexte de la création contemporaine, pour établir les filiations et ruptures -conceptuelles, esthétiques, techniques- indispensables à l'appréhension de l'art d'aujourd'hui, une information sur les artistes et les oeuvres doit être disponible.

Le projet, Pionniers & Précurseurs, a pour vocation de proposer une présentation, en collaboration avec des historiens d'art et des chercheurs compétents, des artistes du XXème siècle dont les oeuvres et la pensée ont été déterminantes pour l'art technologique. Il s'agit d'artistes relevant non seulement de l'art technologique stricto sensu (les pionniers) mais aussi de ceux qui, quelquefois avant même que la technologie ne soit disponible, avaient ouvert la voie (les précurseurs).

Pionniers & Précurseurs se compose de monographies, de notices approfondies et de liens vers des sites existants.

La sélection des artistes et des sites est opérée par les membres du Groupe Frieda Ackerman.

Pionniers & Pathbreakers

Technological art has a past, but does it have a memory ?

The history of contemporary art, more often than not, ignores art practices related to new technologies or
does not take into account this emerging trend in contemporary artmaking.

There is a need to have accessible information about the work of pioniers and pathbreakers in art and technology. This is needed in order to relate technological art to its own history and, more largely, within the context of contemporary creation. It is also needed to establish the links and ruptures —conceptual, aesthetical, technical—necessary to an understanding of recent work.

The aim of the Leonardo Pioneers & Pathbreakers project is to establish reliable, selected, on line documentation about the artists of the XXth Century those works and thoughts have been seminal for technological art. The project is being carried out through a collaborative working group of art historians, scholars and researchers. It is artists both dealing with art and technology per se (the pioneers) but also artists who, sometimes even before the technology was available, have opened new directions (the pathbreakers).

Pioneers & Pathbreakers proposes three kinds documentation : "monographies", "notices" and links to existing web sites.

The selection of the artists and the sites is done by the members of the Frieda Ackerman Working Group.
